"Fire Cider" is growing in popularity these days, and for good reason. It is a traditional remedy rooted in folk medicine with many variations favored among herbalists. Proponents say can help do everything from strengthen immunity and support digestion to cure hangovers and boost energy. The formula consists of apple cider vinegar infused with powerful decongestant and spicy circulatory herbs, sometimes sweetened with honey. It is surprisingly delicious and easy to incorporate into your daily diet to help boost immunity, stimulate digestion, and warm you up.
Cheryl's Herbs version has changed a bit over the years and is simply known as Vinegar Extract Combination. Vinegar Extract Combination can be taken straight by the spoonful, added to organic veggie juice, grain dishes, soups, or drizzled on a salad with olive oil. Try a tablespoon or two in a cup, cover with hot water and sip like tea when you feel a cold coming on. Have a spoonful after a big meal to aid digestion. I like to take 1 tbsp each morning to help warm me up and boost my health and energy or 3 tbsp if I feel the sniffles or a scratchy throat coming on. Since this is a folk preparation, the ingredients can change seasonally depending on when you make it and what's growing in your area. The base ingredients are apple cider vinegar, garlic, onion, ginger, horseradish, and hot peppers, but there are plenty of other herbs that can be thrown in for added benefits. Some people like to bury their fire cider jar in the ground for a month while it extracts and then dig it up during a great feast to celebrate the changing of the seasons.
Here is a recipe to get you started or if you can't wait that long try our version that is ready to use ready to use.
Ingredients:2 inch piece fresh organic Ginger Root 1/2 cup fresh organic Horseradish Root 1 medium organic Onion, cut into quarters 10 cloves of organic Garlic 2 fresh organic Hot Peppers of your choice, stems removed 1 organic Lemon Several sprigs of fresh organic Rosemary or 2 tbsp of dried Rosemary Leaves 1 tbsp organic Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp organic Cayenne powder 24 oz(give or take) organic Apple Cider Vinegar Raw local Honey to taste
OptionalQuart size jar
Directions:Prepare all of your roots, fruits, and herbs and place them in a blender with about half of the vinegar, blend well and pour into a quart sized jar with the remaining vinegar. If you don't have a blender be sure to chop all the ingredients by hand. Use a piece of natural parchment paper or plastic wrap under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal. Shake well! Store in a dark, cool place for 2 weeks to one month and remember to shake daily.
After one month, use cheesecloth or our Mary's Tea Brewing bag to strain out the pulp, pouring the vinegar into a clean jar. Be sure to squeeze as much of the liquid goodness as you can from the pulp while straining. If desired, add 1/4 cup of honey and mix well.
